Idea Napkin No. 1

Currently, I am a sophomore at the University of Florida majoring in Sport Management. I have been surrounded by entrepreneurs my entire life, and I have developed some entrepreneurial traits throughout the course of my education. I have had experience in past classes working with how to create a new start-up company, and what the possible obstacles may be. Ideally, this business concept would expand to other college campuses where scooters are heavily relied upon.

I am offering a stylish, practical way for my customers to feel safe and confident while operating their scooters. There are too many people who scoot daily without a helmet, and my product will provide incentive for them to wear one. I am offering my product to all scooter owners in Gainesville, but specifically targeting college students. The University of Florida is flooded with students that scoot to and from class daily. These students are very seldom wearing helmets, and my business will provide the security that they need. Most students find helmets uncomfortable and ugly, and my business will provide a solution to those problems. Most college students do not wear helmets, and this is due to the fact that no one enjoys wearing them. My business will provide a personalized helmet that customers will appreciate. Helmets are extremely important, as they can be the difference between life and death in an accident. There have been multiple accounts of students in crashes without helmets who have been seriously injured.

Every scooter store in Gainesville sells helmets, but every helmet looks and feels similar. My business will provide a helmet that students can personalize and value. My position as a student in Gainesville who drives a scooter helps me better understand the mindset of those similar to me.

Overall, I think that these elements are all fairly compatible. I think it makes sense to start a business such as this in Gainesville where scooters are so popular. This is an extremely large college town, and my product would be a commonly used product. I think that college students value their safety, and I am providing a fun way to ensure safety every day.

  1. Wallace,

I think you are on to something here. I am a scooter user that "scoots" to class daily. I also am a fit for your market as I do not wear a helmet. If executed correctly, your product could be very successful in and around Gainesville. Have you researched other colleges to see if they have a similar scooter population? I believe it is important to have an idea of just how big your target market may be. One thing I was looking forward to reading is what exactly is your plan? You mentioned the standard of helmets now are uncomfortable and ugly, which I agree with, and that you have a solution to this problem. What is that solution? I think if you could identify a concrete plan and a precise target market nationwide, you could move forward with your idea. If you have a chance, check out my idea located in the link below. I have been slowly tweaking the concept so stay tuned for changes!

  2. Hi Wallace,

I really like your idea. As someone that drives a car in Gainesville, it really affects me, as I've seen some very bad drivers on scooters around here, and many of them don't even wear helmets! Motorcycles are extremely dangerous and everyone knows that, so they wear helmets and special gear most of the time. Scooters can be just as dangerous, and possibly even more dangerous because people are so careless on them. Just the other day I saw someone on a scooter almost die by cutting in front of someone carelessly, and I think that your idea would make more people on them wear helmets, which would greatly increase safety around campus.

  3. I really like your idea. I bike to campus everyday and I don't wear a helmet, so I could also be a potential customer. Have you thought how the scooters are going to hold the helmets or are the drivers going to have to carry their helmets with them all day. I know motorcycles have a place where you can lock the helmet to the bike, do scooters? Also how much customization are you going to allow for these helmets. My business plan is customized smart phone cases, so that's something I've had to think of. You should look at my blog here's a link.
